Conference Test-Run

We will host a virtual conference test on May 31, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. (EDT). This test will help those who plan to attend virtually troubleshoot any A/V issues and will help the conference hosts ensure the best possible experience for those attendees. Those who register to attend the conference will be contacted with more information via email.

Best Practices – GoToMeeting

Your meeting organizer will send you a link that will be be active at a specified date/time. Simply follow the link to enter the online meeting at that time.  You may be prompted to download a simple plugin for your browser on laptop or desktop computer or an app if you are on tablet or smartphone. You do not need to be an administrator on your device to load this plugin.  Once the plugin has loaded, GoToMeeting will launch a control panel where you can control your video, audio, and communicate via a chat box. The meeting organizer will also be able to mute or unmute your audio and video or send you a request to unmute.

Before you connect:

  • Make sure your browser or app is up to date
  • Test your audio and video systems to ensure they are working:
    • Windows: Tools>Options>Audio Settings / Video Settings
    • Mac: Skype>Preferences>Audio/Video
  • Review background objects that could be distracting in your video feed.
  • Avoid bright backgrounds

Suggested audio/microphone settings:

  • Individual remote participants should use a headset (USB or analog) to assure clearer audio and reduce background noise.  This is especially important for those connecting via smartphone or tablet.
  • Wrap around microphones typically provide better and more consistent audio quality than built-in microphones
  • Remote participants should keep their microphones muted when not speaking.  This is especially important when groups are participating through one GoToMeeting connection.

Suggested video settings:

  • Make sure your built in webcam is functioning and recognized by GoToMeeting.  If using an external webcam, make sure GoToMeeting is set to use that webcam versus the default built-in video device.

Suggested overall connectivity settings:

  • A hard wired connection (e.g. over Ethernet cable) is recommended as it can offer better stability than wifi.
  • If no hard wired connection is available, remote participants should find a secure and stable wireless network.
  • Use an institutional connection if at all possible. Consumer broadband is typically much slower than institutional connections.
